I dropped my lobster. This process has just begun and I have already dropped my lobster— my administrative lobster. Last spring, in our first student teaching meeting, Will Camp stood in front of a room crammed to capacity with student teachers; he was juggling toy lobsters. As he juggled, he explained the metaphor: lobster one represents your personal life, lobster two represents your school life, and lobster number three is the administrative lobster. In this case, the third lobster embodies both the local school administration and FLC requirements and assignments.
This all began with lack of communication between the school staff and the Human Resources department regarding the correct procedures for placing a student teacher. I was finally given a placement in a 7th grade reading and study skills class after all of the misunderstandings were corrected. In the meantime, I missed all of the teacher in-service days, the first day of school, and open house. I didn’t simply drop my administrative lobster; it was run over by a Mack truck.
However, after spending the first day in my new classroom, I am excited about my placement! I have already picked my lobster up off the asphalt and started juggling again.
